The frozen pregnancy of an unfortunate, nameless woman killed in an accident was made immortal by making a mold created by applying mud and filled with wax. She is a Pietá lying back against a chair with her belly sliced open like a pomegranate and the fetus exposed, its little head pointing down. She is a life-like, life-size wax statue.

This portrait represents a Hungarian hussar Gregor Baci, who apparently survived a piercing injury with a lance to the right side of his face. The injury may have occurred during a jousting tournament or while fighting the Ottoman Turks. The painting came from the collection of Ferdinand II of Tirol (1529-1595).
